As just about everyone will agree, the most visible and noticeable aspect to a model truck’s design is the paint job. This is a matter of simple math. The exterior shell of the truck has the most surface area, compared to other exposed parts such as the wheels and the tires – which makes the body of the truck the most visible. This is why it’s so important to get truck paint right.
A good paint job will make your truck look and feel like your own, and you will have a customized vehicle to show off to your friends. A poorly done paint job, on the other hand, would just be shameful, considering how easy and inexpensive it is to give your model truck a makeover.
How to Paint a Truck
There are two approaches to model truck painting that you can apply to make the job easy and get the best results. These are hand painting and air brush painting. There are pros and cons to each approach, and you should carefully consider them before making a decision.
Hand Painting
When it comes to how to paint a truck, hand painting is traditional, since it was really the only way that model truck enthusiasts could customize their pieces before air brush technology was made commonly available. This approach takes great dexterity and delicate fingers, because you have to apply the paints in precise locations and make sure that you don’t spill over to other areas. You also need the right equipment (i.e., the right types of brushes with a fair variety to match different circumstances, the right kinds and a fair variety of paint, etc.). The good thing about hand painting tools is that they are relatively cheap, and it is also a very economical approach, since you don’t waste a lot of the material that you use, as opposed to air brushing.
Air Brush Painting
On the other hand, air brushing requires more strategy than skill. You have to plan out how you are going to paint the different colors onto the truck in proper sequence, because you will have to use sticker paper or a similar material to contain the spread of the sprayed paint. This will give your lines a level of precision that would have been almost impossible to achieve with the older hand painting technique, as long as you are able to pull the trick off properly. Another advantage to truck painting with an air brush is that it is usually faster than hand painting, at least in terms of waiting for the paint to dry. Air brush paint typically dries more quickly.
Experimenting
